This is our project so far:
|
Functions:
The functions that we demonstrated are the breakdown of food in 3 parts of the digestive system and the absorption of water in the large intestine.
Description:
Our digestive system model begins in a blender that represents the break down in the mouth. We will also be putting Amylase, the breakdown enzyme found in the mouth, inside the blender as well. Next we will pour the contents of the blender through the esophagus and into the stomach. The stomach will have the enzyme Renin, which is the enzyme found in the stomach, already inside of it. We will then rock the contents back and forth to mix them together. After that we will pour the broken down food from the stomach into the small intestine which will be sealed at the end. As we pour the chyme (the broken down food) into the small intestine, we will also be pouring in the chemical, Lipase, which is an enzyme released from the pancreas and used in the digestive process of the small intestine. After that is blended in, we are going to release the contents into the large intestine, which will have a closed valve at the end. To represent the absorption of water in the large intestine, we will be inserting syringes into the tubing in order to draw out some of the liquid. Finally, we will open the valve and release the contents into a container at the end.
Things We Still Need To Do:
We still need to attach the esophagus, find the correct food to enzyme ratio, and then test with the system using the enzymes as well as the syringes.
Grand Rounds Activity Reflection
First in this activity our group got a disease to research and find the symptoms for and then we did grand rounds where we went around and diagnosed other and the went around and tried to diagnose us. Next we collaborated with our groups and diagnosed what everybody had, using a piece of paper where we wrote our claim, evidence, and reasoning. Finally, we chose one of the diseases and wrote a paragraph on it that can be seen below. Throughout this project, I learned many things about the endocrine system like how complex it is how how easy it is to mess it up. More specifically I learned how closely connected everything is and how many things need to be perfectly in place in order for everything to work.
Grand Rounds CLEAR Reflection
The disease that I am analyzing is Grave’s Disease. Although Grave’s Disease affects the endocrine system, it is considered an autoimmune disorder. Only one percent of the population has this disease and it is considered a type of hyperthyroidism. Symptoms of this disease include anxiety, tremors, sweating, weight loss, and vision problems, which are all seen in the patient in question. The explanation of what is happening in the body during this disease is that the body’s immune system is creating antibodies that trick your Thyroid Stimulating Hormone into over-producing thyroid hormones by attaching to them and taking over. The thyroid hormone controls heart function digestive function, muscle control, brain development, and bone maintenance so an irregularity in that can greatly affect your body.
Human Body Project Reflection
Some challenges that we had were attaching the tubes to the funnels and making the food flow through. Some of our successes were showing the interaction that the digestive system has with the muscular system, using actual enzymes that broke down the food, and our creative decoration using food wrappers. Everything in our model worked well except for the syringe could've drawn out a little more fluid and we could've perfected the consistency of the blended up food that we ran through the system. The judge was impressed by our use of enzymes as well as the decoration. We got a perfect score except for 4 points. We lost a point in the purpose category, the schematics category, the construction category, and the answering questions category but that is was still considered a very good score relative to the rest of the class.
