Hand Warmer Project
For this project, our task was to create an inexpensive but effective hand warmer that can be sold at the San Marin student store. We were given the choice of six different salts the use in our hand warmer and we performed tests with each of them to find which one would work the best. Our group chose to use Lithium Chloride because we found that it had to highest temperature increase per gram. Below is our power point presentation that we used as the pitch for our hand warmer:

Content:
Thermochemistry - the study of energy transfer as a heat that goes along with a chemical reaction and physical changes.
Thermochemical Equation - equation that includes the quantity of energy released or absorbed as heat during the reaction as written.
Enthalpy of Reaction - the quantity of energy transferred as heat during a reaction.
Enthalpy Change - amount of energy absorbed by a system as heat during a process at constant pressure.
Calorimeter - a machine that measures the energy change as heat in a chemical or physical change.
Heat - energy transferred from some matter to other matter because of a difference in their temperatures.
We used these concepts to assist us in the creation of our hand warmer. We applied these terms when performing our calculations that can be seen in our power point presentation.
Reflection:
Throughout this project, my group and I experienced some peaks as well as some pits in our projects. A couple things that we did well were that we worked very cooperatively as a group, our project worked well, and we performed our calculations very meticulously. Everybody in my group got along very well so we were able to work really cooperatively. In the end, our project worked just how we wanted it to and our presentation included all of the main aspects requested. In the weeks leading up to the creation of our hand warmer, we had to do a lot of experiments and calculations that we worked hard on to assure that they were accurate. An example of some things that we could've improved on are time management and focusing on the task on hand. These two improvements are somewhat connected. Since our group got along so well, we were often unable to focus on the task when we were supposed to. As a result, this inability to focus affected our time management in a negative way. We were able to complete the hand warmer and the presentation but if we had used our time better then we would have been able to make further improvements to refine our product. An example of an improvement we would have made if we had more time is that we would have added a felt cover to our hand warmer in order to make it more aesthetically pleasing and better able to insulate. Overall, I was confident in the work that my group and I produced and it provided us with a great learning opportunity as well.
